Ray Gertler, PhD, Psychologist

I have been in clinical practice for almost 30 years providing individual, marital, and family therapy. I view an individual's history as a significant contributor to how they cope and adapt through the challenges and opportunities, life presents.  While considering history, I tend to pay close attention to current strengths and resiliencies as I work with clients in addressing the variety of concerns and problems that people present with.  I tend to look at internal thoughts as a contributor to self-defeating behaviors and as impediments to growth and transformation. Considering both internal stressors as well as external events, I have also found it to be very helpful to assist clients to be more fully present in the moment, cultivating mindfulness as a tool to move beyond reactivity.  This might involved the teaching of formal techniques of practice to diminish reactivity both to ones internal thoughts as well as cultivating a greater capacity to be 'present' in the moment.

I have also worked extensively with people recovering from addictions and chemical dependency.
