My training and experience has prepared me for working with a wide variety of psychological conditions and life circumstances affecting children, adolescents, and adults. Early work in publically funded agencies, involvement with schools and an strong belief in the potential and strengths of children and families has narrowed my interest to those groups, though I continue to work with a small number of couples and individual adults. I have lived and worked in Eugene since the year 2000, opening a private practice here in 2001. Prior to that I worked in Washington state as a psychologist (and am still licensed in that state) for a small, semi-rural community mental health center providing services primarily to children and adolescents.
All treatments attempt to change or reduce factors presumed to underlie or control problems. My focus is first to fully understand an individual client's, family, or couples perspective/world view and then respectfully collaborate with them to process and make changes necessary to lead a more meaningful and functional life. People do the best they can and often need better skills to be more effective in the world. While clients may not have caused all of their problems they have to solve them anyway. Treatments focused on specific, measurable, indicators of change using empirically based interventions are most likely to succeed. As an invited guest of the individual, couple, or family my aim is to find ways to actively help and then to leave (end treatment) once objectives are reached. This often involves a short-term episode of care (6 to 20 weekly to every other week sessions) that can, if necessary, be followed by a longer period of maintenance (monthly or quarterly) sessions.
