Maria Aguirre, PhD, Psychologist

I provide insight-oriented, depth psychotherapy for teens, adults, and couples.    My goal as a psychologist and psychotherapist is to create a safe, supportive, therapeutic environment that fosters my clients’ well-being, creativity, healing, and growth. I work collaboratively with my clients to help them reconnect with their inner strength and wisdom. I have a passion for helping individuals establish more satisfying, authentic relationships with others and with their own selves.   I welcome the opportunity to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds in my practice. I have worked extensively with Latino/Latina, African-American, and Asian-American women and men. My practice is LGBT-affirming and supportive. I am bicultural and a native Spanish-speaker, and I have experience providing bilingual (Spanish and English) psychotherapy.

My Focus

I integrate complementary therapeutic approaches in my practice that emphasize authentic relationships and individual strengths. Specifically, I have been heavily influenced by interpersonal, psychodynamic, and existential-humanistic theories, as well as multicultural, feminist movements in psychology. I strive to establish a collaborative, empowering atmosphere that strikes the balance between support and challenge. My style is generally warm, casual, direct, and transparent. I am an empathic listener and actively participate in sessions by sharing my observations, fostering insight, and sharing practical feedback to help my clients find relief and to effectively address the challenges of life.

Groups I Work With

Trauma recovery (childhood abuse, sexual assault, and relationship violence), Relational Concerns (trust, intimacy, closeness), Depression, Women's Issues, Bicultural/Bilingual Therapy and Grief and Loss.
