There are many reasons why parents or children ask to see a counselor. Individuals may notice that they feel sad too often, suffer overwhelming anxiety, are handicapped by attention or learning problems, or exhibit behavior problems that overwhelm others. Whatever challenges or difficulties a child or teen experiences, family members are often stressed by them as well. Conflict between parents and children can be intense at times and worsen problems. Relationships can become strained and distant, leaving a family member feeling isolated or pushed away. My role would be to help the child, teen, and parents work together to overcome the problems you face. I believe it is important to focus our energies and to be very clear about what people can do to achieve the changes they desire. As you can tell from the next few paragraphs, working with me would involve some effort in between sessions.
I specialize in helping children, adolescents, and families address difficulties, ongoing problems, or distressing events. I have expertise in addressing the needs of those as young as 2 all the way through the teen years and the move towards independence.
The initial couple of sessions would be spent exploring the nature and extent of problem, so that I can get a good understanding of the difficulties you face and your efforts to address them to date. I want to learn from your experiences, understand what this is like for each family member, and learn what strategies either show some promise or have already been ruled ineffective. Once focused in on the primary concerns, we would collaboratively develop a plan to address these difficulties. Many common problems can be effectively resolved (or at least greatly reduced) through the use of well tested interventions. Sometimes the complexity of problems and family circumstances necessitate the development of a more specialized (think specific to your family) plan of action. Whether easy or hard, this development process will end with a specific plan of action. Usually both children and parents will have a role in the plan, unless there are reasons for more limited involvement. Through the implementation of this plan, change usually develops. We will together monitor the results of these efforts to make sure people see reasonable progress in a short period of time. Where needed, we can fine tune the plan to make it more effective and to adapt it to additional concerns.
